‘Direct work in the landscape is central to my practice. Each site has its own palette and demands something particular of me… at times I integrate gouache, acrylic or watercolour with what is available in the landscape and at others the found material provides all I need. By grubbing around for my tools and pigments I make discoveries that I would otherwise miss.’
Frances was born and raised in a fenland village in Cambridgeshire. She currently lives with the sound of the sea in West Dorset. By the time she left home for Aberystwyth University – chosen for its location by the sea – she had already established her plein air practice of painting. Frances later spent a post- graduate year at Goldsmiths’ College (Art Teachers’ Certificate) and Wimbledon School of Art (MA Printmaking). She is a senior tutor at West Dean College.
Frances has recently won the prestigious Ladram Red Award 2016 from the Mall Galleries London. Frances was competing with 900 artists worldwide so this is a great honour indeed. Andy Wood, president of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, said, “The RI selection committee was impressed by Frances’use of materials”.
