Gilson Lavis

Gilson paints remarkable portraits. He is fast developing a reputation as a unique and stylish artist. In this his third exhibition at the Hatch Gallery, Gilson has demonstrated how his dramatic take on portraits has expanded to incorporate a wider range of inspiring subjects and pays tribute not only to some of the amazing performers Gilson has worked with but performers who have contributed to the culture and mood of our great nation. The list of notables that own a Gilson original is impressive to say the least: Emeli Sande, Eric Clapton, Paloma Faith, Rumer, Eddie Reader, Tom Jones, Jools Holland, Evlyne Glennie and the list is continuing to grow.

Gilson Lavis, the drummer, has an enviable career in music which spans 5 decades. In the 60’s, Gilson worked with music legends such as Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Tammy Wynette and Edwin Starr. In the 70’s and 80’s he was one of the original members of the highly successful band SQUEEZE. They toured the world, performing in venues including Madison Square Garden, Hollywood Bowl and The Royal Albert Hall. SQUEEZE had numerous chart successes, Cool for Cats, Up The Junction and Take Me I’m Yours to name just a few and seminal albums including EAST SIDE STORY. From the 90’s to the present day he has been performing with JOOLS HOLLAND and his RHYTHM AND BLUES ORCHESTRA. The Orchestra started with just Jools and Gilson as a duo and has grown into the most successful big band of modern times.
